Penang's transport mix is built around three pillars: the island-wide bus network (Rapid Penang), ride-hailing apps, and metered taxis. Buses are the cheapest way to move, frequent on trunk corridors like the Georgetown, Airport and Georgetown, Gurney routes, and the stored-value Rapid Passport card lets tourists tap on/off without fumbling for coins. Ride-hailing (Grab is dominant) sits in the moderate bracket: a fraction of a taxi, door-to-door, and the only option after midnight when most buses wind down. Taxis exist but are a splurge unless you're splitting the fare. Insist on the meter or agree a price before boarding. First-timers should download the Rapid Penang app for live bus maps and Grab for the rest. Skip the "airport limo" touts inside the terminal, they quote flat, inflated fares. Instead, head downstairs to the official taxi counter for metered rides, or book Grab from the designated pick-up zone. If you're staying in George Town and arrive before 11 p.m., the airport bus (Route 401E) is cheap and drops you within walking distance of most heritage hotels.
